The current fervor to overhaul the nation’s health care delivery system has legislators discussing how to change the way post-acute care providers, including long-term acute care hospitals, home health agencies, skilled nursing facilities, and inpatient rehabilitation facilities, are reimbursed for treating Medicare beneficiaries. LTACHs Should be on the Lookout for Recalled Peanut Products

LTACHs often subcontract their dietary services departments to national providers, host hospitals (for HwHs), or a host hospital’s contracted dietary service provider.  CMS recently urged nursing homes and other long-term care facilities to determine whether they are currently in possession of peanut butter and peanut butter products recalled by the FDA as a result of possible Salmonella contamination.  LTACHs should speak with their dietary department or dietary service provider to determine what steps are being taken to ensure that patients are not served potentially contaminated products. CMS Stops Coverage for “Wrong Surgeries” Effective January 15, 2009

The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (“CMS”) has issued three Coverage Decision Memorandums establishing National Coverage Determinations (NCDs) that “wrong surgeries” — surgeries on the wrong body part, surgeries on the wrong patient, and the wrong procedure — are not covered by Medicare. The wrong body party, wrong patient, and wrong procedure NCDs are effective January 15, 2009 and apply to all provider types and coverage under both Part A and Part B. Read More...
