Kindred LTACH Development Continues into 2009 and 2010
Kindred Healthcare is poised to continue the strategic growth of its LTACH business. Kindred, which is already the largest operator of LTACHs in the U.S. (with over 80 LTACHs and 6,428 licensed beds) opened 70-bed freestanding Kindred Hospital-The Palm Beaches in Riviera Beach, Florida on October 13, 2008.
Kindred also announced plans for a new freestanding hospital in Melbourne, Florida. The Melbourne facility, which will open in October 2009, will be a 60-bed freestanding LTACH, and will be the company’s ninth hospital in Florida.
Kindred also has plans to replace and expand its existing Sacramento, California LTACH. The current LTACH, which opened in 1992, has 39-beds and offers rehabilitation, ventilator weaning, wound care, and other services. The replacement facility is slated to open in January 2010 and will have 58 LTACH beds.
Kindred will also open a new 50-bed freestanding LTACH in Springfield, Illinois in April 2010. The hospital was originally expected to open in the first quarter of 2008, but development was delayed by a forgotten underground sewer line. The Company currently operates five LTACHs in Illinois.
Kindred will also open two hospital-within-hospital facilities in Torrance, California and Los Angeles, California. The Torrance facility, which is scheduled to open in January 2010, will have 50 LTACH beds, and the Los Angeles facility will have 29 LTACH beds.
